The administration led by President Akufo-Addo has initiated the rollout of the One-Student One-Tablet (1S1T) program in STEM schools nationwide, aiming to modernize education in Ghana.

In a significant move towards educational advancement, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister for Education, recently unveiled plans to provide over 1.4 million students in government Senior High Schools with complimentary tablets. This initiative, scheduled to commence in April, forms a crucial part of the Free Senior High School program, geared towards enhancing teaching and learning standards in public Second-cycle schools.

The announcement comes on the heels of Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s emphasis on the government’s dedication to digitalizing education. Speaking at the New Year School held at the University of Ghana, Legon, Dr. Bawumia reiterated the impending distribution of free electronic tablets to all Senior High School students nationwide. These tablets, preloaded with essential textbooks and past examination papers, are envisioned as invaluable educational aids, facilitating students’ access to crucial resources for their academic endeavors.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized, “This year, we are committed to equipping every Senior High School student with tablets containing vital textbooks and preloaded past questions.” He stressed that the initiative symbolizes a shift towards leveraging technology to enhance learning and prepare youth for success in the digital era.

The government has already kickstarted the distribution process, with 868 tablets allocated to the Sefwi Awaso STEM SHS, aiming to enrich the learning experience and ensure equal opportunities for all students. This endeavor represents a significant stride towards integrating Information Communication Technology (ICT) into the education system.

Dr. Adutwum articulated the government’s vision for a technologically advanced educational landscape, expressing his delight in announcing that every student in esteemed institutions will soon receive a tablet computer. He stated, “We are developing a state-of-the-art learning management system, providing comprehensive training to teachers, and transitioning homework and class activities to an online platform. Furthermore, we are dedicated to enhancing the learning environment by deploying more smart boards, fostering a holistic, technology-driven ecosystem.”
