The tragic incident, which happened three days ago, according to friends, saw her attackers smashing her head with a fire extinguisher and leaving her unconscious around the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City, the state capital.

Despite being rushed to the intensive care unit of a hospital, Omozuwa couldn’t make it as she succumbed to the injuries sustained during the savage attack.

Friends and all those, who knew her closely during her lifetime, have been paying tribute and calling for the perpetrators of the crime to be brought to justice.

“She was raped on her way home from church and had her head smashed with a fire extinguisher in broad day light around Ikpoba Hill, Benin City. This happened yesterday, May 30, 2020,” one friend wrote.

Vera Uwaila Omozuwa: UNIBEN reacts to rape of 100 level student in church

The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has reacted to the alleged rape of one of its students, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.

It was learned that Uwaila, who was a 100-level Microbiology student of UNIBEN, was raped and killed by some unknown person while reading in a Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, in Benin City.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Lilian Salami, in a statement through the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, expressed shock over the news.

He described the action as condemnable, adding that inflicting such pain on any family in this era of COVID-19 pandemic is a wicked act.

While commiserating with the bereaved family on the loss of their daughter, Mrs Salami prayed God to grant her soul peaceful rest.

The Vice-Chancellor advised students of the institution to be careful of the company they keep and the places they visited.

He added that a delegation had been sent by the university’s management to commiserate with the bereaved family.

Governor Godwin Obaseki has spoken on the murder of a student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), identified as Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.

The 22-year-old was gang-raped and clubbed to death by yet-to-be-identified persons.

The incident took place on the night of Wednesday last week, inside the Ikpoba Hill branch of Redeemed Christian Church of God(RCCG) in Benin, Edo state.

The 100-Level student of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Life Sciences in the institution, was said to have gone to the church to read when her assailants pounced on her.

Reacting to the incident on Sunday, Governor Obaseki assured that the evil perpetrators will not go unpunished.

He said: “I have ordered the Nigeria Police Force to thoroughly investigate the circumstances that led to the death of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100-level student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

“The Police have been mandated to identify, arrest and prosecute anyone found culpable in her death. The Violence Against Persons (VAP) Law is in effect in our state.

“Using this law, we would ensure to investigate what exactly transpired and deal decisively with those found complicit in the dastardly act, whoever they might be. #JusticeForUwa.”

Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministries, has condemned the alleged killing of a female student of University of Benin, UNIBEN, in Edo State, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.

Uwaila, a 100 level Microbiology student of UNIBEN was gruesomely raped and murdered by some unknown persons while reading in a Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, in Benin City.

Reacting to the incident, Apostle Suleman vowed that those behind the dastardly act won’t go unpunished.

In a tweet, the clergyman disclosed that he spoke with the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki and the matter “won’t be swept under the carpet.”

He wrote: “I strongly condemn the gruesome killing of Vera Uwaila, a 100 level microbiology student of our great uniben. Dastardly as it it, we are yet to hear of any arrest. May God give her parents fortitude to bear the loss. Justice must be served as she was just 22yrs old.#justiceforuwa.

“I just spoke with the governor, the death of Vera Uwaila won’t be swept under the carpet. If someone could have the nerve to come kill a girl inside the church, then there would be consequences. If there are mad men, there are psychiatric doctors.”

Mavin Producer, Don Jazzy and popular Nigerian Singer, Tiwa Savage, have lamented over the recent killings and happenings in Nigeria.

Tiwa took to her Twitter page on Sunday expressing her frustration over the state of the nation while seeking an end.

According to her, Nigerians were tired of complaining about the same thing for years without no solution.

Her tweet read: #WeAreTired of senseless killings, lorries falling on road and killing passengers, ACs catching fire and burning houses, young girls getting raped, young boys killed by SARS no jobs for graduates.

“Please add your own frustration because my list is long.

“We are tired of saying the same thing our parents, grand parents, great grand parents have been saying about Nigeria.”

Her tweet is coming at a time where Nigerians have also taken to their social media pages lamenting over the death of a female student of University of Benin, UNIBEN, in Edo State, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.

Vera Omozuwa: Suspect linked to rape, murder of UNIBEN undergraduate arrested

The Edo State Police Command has arrested one of the suspects linked to the rape and murder of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.

AUTHENTIC NEWS GIANT reported earlier that the 22-year-old 100-level student of the University of Benin, Edo State was raped and killed by unknown persons while reading in RCCG church in Benin city.

Confirming the arrest, Spokesman of Edo Police Command, Chidi Nwabuzor told newsmen that the suspect was arrested after the fingerprint on the fire extinguisher she was attacked with was examined.

Nwabuzor revealed that operatives of the command arrested the suspect after the Area Commander of Ikpoba Hill mobilized his men to take action.

“The item used in the assault, which was a fire extinguisher, was recovered, immediately the operatives who were with some specialists screened the finger prints which led to our suspect.

“Around the place of the incident, the suspect was arrested,” Nwabuzor said.

The death of Uwa has raised concerns and stirred reactions from notable figures, as well as Nigerians on the social media.

The Inspector general of Police, IGP Adamu disclosed that investigative aids have been deployed to Edo to help speed up the investigations.

He assured that the perpetrators of the crime will be brought to book in the shortest possible time.
