In a move of protest and solidarity, the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State, has launched a three-day strike following an incident of assault against one of its members by relatives of a patient within the hospital premises.
The President of the ARD, John Oladapo, spoke to journalists in Ibadan, detailing the circumstances surrounding the assault and the demands of the resident doctors. Oladapo revealed that the altercation occurred on Sunday when the doctor, attending to a Sickle Cell patient in distress at the Emergency Department, was accosted and violently assaulted by two individuals in the consulting room.
“The attack on our colleague was deliberate, planned, and premeditated,” stated Oladapo. “The doctor, in the course of duty, was subjected to physical violence, causing both physical injuries and significant psychological distress.”
According to Oladapo, the assailants also targeted the patient’s mother, who attempted to intervene but was likewise assaulted. Despite efforts by hospital security to intervene and rescue the doctor, the assailants continued their assault until they were subdued.
The ARD President emphasized the need for a public apology from those responsible for the assault and urged the management of UCH to bolster its security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
