In a recent press briefing held in Anambra State, the Truth, Peace, and Justice Commission unveiled its findings, shedding light on the underlying factors fueling insecurity within the state. Led by Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, the commission highlighted land disputes, organized crime, and cultism as major contributors to the prevailing security challenges.
Contrary to popular belief, Odinkalu emphasized that attributing insecurity solely to groups like the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and herders oversimplifies the issue. Instead, he pointed to deep-seated issues such as land-related conflicts and various criminal activities as the primary drivers of instability.
Established by Governor Soludo in June 2022 amidst escalating insecurity in the South-East region, the commission was tasked with unraveling the circumstances behind the rising unrest. After months of investigation, the commission submitted its comprehensive report to the state government, outlining key findings and recommendations.
Odinkalu highlighted the misconception surrounding the role of IPOB in Anambra’s security landscape, clarifying that while the group exists in certain areas, violence often occurs in regions where IPOB’s presence is minimal. He stressed that addressing IPOB alone would not resolve the underlying issues contributing to insecurity.
The chairman drew attention to illegal activities such as bunkering, particularly prevalent in coastal areas like Ogbaru and Ayamelum. These activities, often overlooked, contribute substantially to violence and abductions in the state, according to Odinkalu.
Cultism emerged as another significant factor exacerbating insecurity in Anambra. Odinkalu revealed that organized gangs exploit land conflicts to assert control, utilizing cult groups to intimidate and silence opposition. Despite legal rulings implicating certain individuals in criminal activities, their influence within local communities remains largely unchecked.
In urging Governor Soludo to implement the commission’s recommendations, Odinkalu emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of insecurity and holding accountable those responsible for perpetuating violence. He expressed confidence in the governor’s commitment to tackling the state’s security challenges. Still, he cautioned against complacency in implementing necessary reforms.
The commission’s report serves as a call to action, urging stakeholders to prioritize peace-building efforts and address the underlying issues driving insecurity in Anambra State. As the state grapples with these challenges, decisive action is needed to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.
