Today's Politicians Prioritize Personal Interests Over Nigeria's Well-being - Christopher Kolade

Christopher Kolade, a former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, recently voiced his concerns about contemporary Nigerian politicians’ priorities. In an interview with Channels Television, Kolade lamented that many politicians prioritize their interests over the nation’s welfare today. Reflecting on his stance, Kolade refrained from entering politics because he feared compromising his values.

He drew a sharp contrast between the politicians of the First Republic, from 1963 to 1966, and those of the present era. According to Kolade, the politicians of the First Republic were dedicated to serving Nigeria and often sacrificed their interests for the greater good. Some even endured imprisonment and hardships for their beliefs. However, Kolade observed a significant shift in the ethos of modern politicians, noting that many prioritize their gain over national progress.

Kolade’s reservations about contemporary politics were further exemplified by his experience with the Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), where he was appointed by the Goodluck Jonathan administration in 2012. Despite facing advice from friends to decline the role to safeguard his reputation, Kolade felt compelled to accept the responsibility, believing someone needed to step up to the challenge. He sought guidance from his faith and resolved to fulfil his duty, trusting that divine guidance would see him through.

However, Kolade’s tenure as chairman of SURE-P was challenging. In 2013, he resigned from his position due to concerns related to age, corruption, and transparency issues within the program.

Throughout his interview, Kolade’s remarks underscored his unwavering commitment to integrity and service to the nation. Despite the prevailing cynicism surrounding Nigerian politics, he remained steadfast in believing that moral leadership is essential for the country’s progress. Kolade’s insights serve as a reminder of the importance of upholding ethical standards in governance and the imperative of placing national interests above personal gain.
