Tinubu Orders Soldiers to Pursue Advocates of Sit-at-Home Protests in Southeast

President Bola Tinubu has directed security forces to hunt down those responsible for the murder of five soldiers in Aba, Abia State, and the individuals advocating for sit-at-home orders in the Southeast.

In a personal statement issued on Saturday night, President Tinubu emphasized that no one should feel emboldened to attack state agents.

Reacting to the soldiers’ killing on Thursday, May 30, allegedly by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Tinubu warned that the federal government would take stringent actions against those who habitually target military personnel.

“I have received the distressing news of the killing of five soldiers by suspected militants of the proscribed terrorist organization, IPOB. These soldiers, who were on peacekeeping duty in Aba, Abia State, were murdered on Thursday, just two months after a similar tragic incident in Okuama, Delta State.

“These senseless and barbaric acts are condemned and will not be tolerated in our country. Our soldiers and police are tasked with protecting us from aggressors and non-state actors. Many have sacrificed their lives in this duty, while others have faced abuse from those they protect. They do not deserve these mindless attacks by unruly elements.

“The federal government will take decisive action against those who continuously attack our armed forces. Under no circumstance should anyone feel entitled to kill state agents. The government of Nigeria and its armed forces can eliminate violent non-state actors that threaten our communities’ safety.

“I urge security agencies to identify and apprehend the masterminds and perpetrators of the Aba attack, as well as those promoting sit-at-home orders. Their actions amount to treason. The restraint shown by security forces should not be seen as a weakness. We aim to build a peaceful society, but no one should doubt that the government will respond appropriately when our officers’ lives are taken.

“My condolences go to the families of the five fallen soldiers, their colleagues, and the leadership of our armed forces. I urge those on peacekeeping duty not to be discouraged by the unfortunate incident in Aba.”
