The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has charged President Muhammadu Buhari to attend the upcoming presidential debate.

Chuks Ibegbu, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the organisation, said Buhari must not send a proxy to the debate.
He stated this while reacting to the decision of Buhari to handover his reelection campaign to a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu.

Buhari had disclosed his decision while inaugurating the APC Presidential Council, at the International Conference Centre, ICC, in Abuja, last week Monday.

Also, the National Publicity Secretary of APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, had disclosed that Buhari may not attend the debate if he feels there are other viable options with which he can engage Nigerians.

However, Ibegbu stressed that Buhari must appear in person and not Tinubu because he, the president, needs to tell Nigerians what he has done since assuming office.

According to Ibegbu: “We can’t preempt anything because we are not part of Buhari’s programme but he has a moral duty to talk to his people on why he wants to rule for another four years.

“He has to come and talk to Nigerians on what he has done in the past four years and what he intends to do in the next four years, he can’t do it by proxy.

“If he doesn’t talk to Nigerians then he has no moral right to lead us. Tinubu or no Tinubu he must tell Nigerians in person what he has done in the last three and half years and it must not be by proxy.”

You might also remind you that Speaking at the inauguration of the council at the international conference centre, Abuja, the president, who is the chairman of the council, said the leadership that formulated the campaign policy would supervise its execution.

According to him, the director-general of the council will have overall responsibility for all aspects of the campaign, including field operations while the secretary will be responsible for all administrative and treasury-related activities of the council.

“Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, my co-chairman, will be fully in charge, and is going to be on 24-hour vigil.’’

He also stated during the inauguration that As we embark on the campaign to secure mandate for the next level, I want to acknowledge the sacrifices and contributions of all stakeholders who have endeavored to keep our party united, and our governance successful,’’ he added.

While appealing to all members to be guided by the enduring vision behind the formation and sustenance of the party, the president urged them to always “keep their eyes on the ball, which is the success of our party at the polls’’.

“I wish to appeal to all members to be guided by the enduring vision behind the formation and sustenance of our party, which is anchored, on sacrifice and imperative to salvage and stabilize our great and promising nation. “I appeal to all our members, and especially those who are in the campaign council, to unite and cooperate and ensure a smooth operation.

The 2019 APC presidential campaign council has been inaugurated by President Buhari. In his speech at the inaugural meeting, he did more than offer us guidance on the campaign. In his straightforward manner, he outlined the achievements of his administration, reminding the nation of the pillars of progressive governance and of our party.

“I think I can speak for all members of the campaign council that we accept the assignments given by the president with devotion and a firm commitment to perform to our utmost the individual and collective tasks given. It is a great honor and responsibility he has given us. We dare not let him down because doing so would also let down the nation.
