Police Officer in Custody for Alleged Killing of Aba Businessman at Checkpoint

Following a tragic incident in Aba, the Abia State Police Command has taken swift action by detaining a police corporal involved in the fatal shooting of a local businessman. Identified as Mr. Emmanuel Okocha from Abiriba in Ohafia Local Government Area, the victim met his untimely demise during an altercation with officers at a checkpoint along Aba-Owerri Road.

The shooting, which occurred on Wednesday, has sparked outrage among residents and garnered attention from local authorities. According to reports, the victim was approached by police personnel at the checkpoint, who allegedly demanded a bribe from him. When Okocha refused to comply, a heated argument ensued, culminating in the fatal shooting by the trigger-happy officer.

Despite efforts to save his life, Okocha succumbed to his injuries on Friday night at a hospital in the commercial city. The incident has prompted the Abia State Police Command to initiate disciplinary measures against the implicated officer, identified as Police Corporal Obagi Njok, attached to the Abayi Police Division.

In a press statement by Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Moureen Chinaka, the command expressed deep regret over the unfortunate incident and extended condolences to the deceased’s family. Chinaka assured the public that the command remains committed to upholding professionalism and the rule of law.

Meanwhile, Senator Enyinaya Abaribe, representing Abia South, and Bishop Sunday Onuoha have condemned the barbaric act and called for justice for the victim. Senator Abaribe described the incident as “primitive and unconscionable” and called for a thorough investigation.

Similarly, Bishop Onuoha denounced the senseless loss of life and urged authorities to hold those responsible accountable for their actions. He also raised concerns about the proliferation of security checkpoints in the South East region, emphasizing the need for reforms to prevent future tragedies.

As investigations into the incident continue, there are growing calls for transparency and accountability within the law enforcement community. The tragic death of Mr. Emmanuel Okocha serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining professional standards and ensuring the safety of civilians during interactions with the police.
