PDP Focuses on Reconciliation Between Wike and Party, Not on 'Firing' - Bode George

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) bigwig Bode George has revealed that the party is actively working towards reconciling with former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. George made this known during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Addressing concerns about internal discord within the party, George emphasized that the PDP’s goal is not to oust individuals but to foster unity and reconciliation among its members. He stressed that efforts are underway to mend fences with Wike and other aggrieved members.

The rift between Wike and the PDP leadership came to a head during the lead-up to the 2023 presidential election. Wike and the G-5 governors opposed the party’s stance on the choice of its presidential flagbearer, advocating for a candidate from the southern region of Nigeria. This disagreement caused significant tension within the party ranks.

Regarding Wike’s continued membership in the PDP and calls for his disciplinary action, George assured that the party is handling the matter internally. He mentioned establishing a standing committee tasked with expanding its membership to review past events thoroughly. George emphasized the importance of moving forward as a party without resorting to public confrontations.

Acknowledging the significance of the party’s performance in the 2023 presidential election, where it emerged as the runner-up to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), George addressed speculations about former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s potential candidacy in the 2027 elections. He noted that whether Atiku decides to run again remains to be seen. He emphasized that the PDP is not beholden to any individual’s interests but operates collectively.

In summary, George reiterated the PDP’s commitment to resolving internal conflicts amicably and emphasized the need for unity and forward-looking strategies as the party prepares for future electoral contests.
