Osinbajo, Ministers, FG Lawyers Meet Over P&IB $9.6b Judgment Debt

Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday met with some ministers and federal government lawyers ostensibly to assess the options opened to the government over the $9.6 billion awarded by a United Kingdom court to P&IB for breach of contract.

The government is looking for ways to avoid paying the money which it believes the economy cannot accommodate.

At the meeting were the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed; Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Festus Keyamo, among others.

Some expatriate government lawyers alongside their Nigerian counterparts were seen emerging from the meeting at about 3 pm while Osinbajo continued the session with the federal government officials.

Even though the agenda of the meeting was not known, it was expected to be centred on how best the government will deal with the controversial judgment.
