LIES TORN US APART 4

Love Story

“Victor please, I can explain.” She said. We all begin with those same words but can we really explain a thing?

I threw my car keys on the bed, asking her to begin if she could. I couldn’t stop laughing as she pleaded with me, it was as if I was about to run mad. My so called wife had another lover. That meant she has been cheating on me but where did she find the time to do that? How long has she been having such conversations with another man? I asked myself. She soon began to bite her finger nails as she went down on her knees between my legs.

“I swear if you don’t start talking, I will seriously start beating you up.” I made sure I scared her just enough. She swallowed her words one more time.

“Who were you talking to on the phone?” I decided to start with that. She grabbed a hold of my trousers tightly as if her life depended on it.

“Victor, I didn’t mean for this to happen. I love you…”

“Cynthia ehn please don’t give me all that. I just need you to answer my question. Who was that you were talking to?”

“I tried loving you all these years but I soon realized I was only deceiving myself.”

I shook my head, I was soon runing out of patience. I knew I had to calm her down before she could really speak to me. So I said, “Cynthia, look at me. I would never hurt you so please just talk to me. Tell me what I’m suspecting isn’t true because I swear to God, I will kill somebody…” I quickly regained my composure when she flinched away from me as she saw my hands go up as if to hit her.

“When we first met, you rushed everything and I played along because I didn’t want to hurt you.”

I didn’t know how I did it but I kept my composure. “Cynthia,” I called her name so sweetly. “are you saying you never loved me?”

She didn’t answer so I asked again but this time, I made sure she felt and heard every anger that was boiling in me. She began to shake her head, jumping at the sound of my voice.

“You see, I loved him too.” She cried out. As soon as she said that, she quickly covered her mouth.

So, there was really another man in her life. I thought to myself. The hurt in my eyes when I realized the woman I had given everything to what not who I presumed she was.

“He was everything I needed but you kept coming back and I gave into you.” She continued.

“Who?” I yelled.

“The night I gave you my number victor you weren’t the only one who called me; he also did.”

“Who, James?” I whispered. She nodded her head as she started to cry once again. I didn’t know why my bestfriend’s name was the first name that came to my mind. I staggered to the bed and sat down. I couldn’t believe my ears. Come on, she had to be wrong. This couldn’t be the same James that I knew of. I knew back when Cynthia and I were dating that James had a thing for her but I thought it was just a mere crush. The way he looked at her at times got me bothered but I never brought it so he wouldn’t think I was betraying our friendship.

“He got angry when I told him that I would like to stay with you and make my marriage with you work. I don’t know how we did it Victor but we both smiled at you, secretly mocking you as we shared our wedding vows.” She said.

“And the accident?” I asked because I was so convinced it wasn’t just a simple accident anymore.

“Before we went to that engagement party that night, I told him I was through with him. It was James who hit us that night victor.” She dropped another one.

“Oh my god! Cynthia, I’ve heard enough of this. Don’t you dare stand there and lie to my face. James would never do such a thing. Do you know long I have known that guy? His like a brother to me for Christ sake!” I was convinced there had to be some mistake somewhere. James wouldn’t want me dead, not because of a woman.

“You blacked out after the incident and so did I but when I woke up the next morning, I was lying in his bed.”

“Bu… ut you said…” I stuttered.

“No,” she was shaking her head yet again. “It was all a lie.” She whispered. “I have been staying with James for these past years. After the accident, he came for me; just me.”

Everything was unfolding like a movie. My whole world was turning upside down in under 10 minutes.

“So why did you come back? You had James and James had you. Why come back!” I yelled.

“A month ago, James told me about a new business deal you made with the company you work for. I came back, not planning to stay forever. I was going to get as much of the money you make from the deal and take it back to James along with Iffy…”

“Wait, wait, wait, what does my child have to do with this?” I stood up, anxious to hear what might come out from her mouth. In this game of lies, there was no telling what could come next.

“She isn’t your victor.” She whispered.

“What did I just hear you say?” I grabbed her tightly by the neck. I felt like strangling her to death. Iffy was all I had, the only thing that brought me joy and now Cynthia wanted to take that away from me. They wanted to finish me completely. I came back to my senses the instant she began to choke. I released my hands from her neck and she feel to the floor. In that moment, I realized I had won and lost everything I thought was mine.

She coughed violently. “Haven’t you realized all these while that she looked nothing like you!” she shouted. “You always like to pretend that everything is fine, that’s how we got here.”

So all this was my fault? Was it wrong for me to have believed that the woman I married was completely faithful to me? How many married men go around conducting paternity test for their children?

Cynthia had finished me, leaving nothing behind. “James wanted me dead that night didn’t he?” She gave me the silent answer.

“Where are you going to?” She asked when she saw me grab my car keys. I pumped into a chair as I tried to run out from that room as fast as I could before I did something that would land me in jail. She followed along.

“Please don’t hurt him Victor.” She said.
