Lagos Airport Runway Closed After Another Aircraft Skids Off the Runway

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed that a Xejet aircraft travelling from Abuja to Lagos experienced a runway mishap at 11:29 AM, prompting the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to close Runway 18L at Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

The aircraft, registered as 5N-BZZ, carried 52 passengers when it skidded off the runway. A fire and rescue team was swiftly deployed to assist in evacuating the passengers from the scene.

NSIB confirmed the incident, stating, “An aircraft belonging to XeJet Airline skidded off the runway at the domestic wing of Murtala Mohammed Airport this morning. A go team has been deployed to the site of the incident.”

This occurrence follows a similar incident involving a Dana MD-82 aircraft last month, which led to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, ordering the carrier’s suspension for a comprehensive audit. Keyamo emphasized the need for stringent oversight in the aviation industry to prevent accidents that could result in the loss of innocent lives.

He stated, “The last thing I want to happen to me as Aviation Minister is to have blood on my hands. I mean the blood of innocent Nigerians caused by negligence or deep complicity of those who are supposed to be regulators of the aviation industry. As minister, I supervise them and ensure they carry out their duties. My job is not to regulate.”
