Labour Announces Indefinite Strike Starting Monday Over Minimum Wage and Electricity Tariff Hike

Organized Labour, represented by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), has announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting Monday, June 3rd. This decision comes as a response to the federal government’s failure to finalize negotiations on a new national minimum wage and to reverse the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

The announcement follows a report by Vanguard Newspaper on Friday, which highlighted the likelihood of a nationwide strike if the tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage did not meet Labour’s expectations.

During a briefing, leaders of the NLC and TUC expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the strike action but affirmed their commitment to pursuing their cause to its conclusion. They called on Nigerians to bear with them as they stood firm in their demands.

The strike action underscores the growing frustration among workers over delays in addressing critical issues affecting their welfare and livelihoods. As negotiations continue, the strike’s impact on various sectors of the economy remains to be seen.
