Kebbi State to Incorporate Ex-Servicemen in the Battle Against Banditry and Terrorism

In a significant move aimed at enhancing security measures and addressing the challenge of insecurity, Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has revealed plans to integrate ex-servicemen into the state’s security framework. The governor disclosed this during the launch and sale of the Armed Forces remembrance emblem, marking the beginning of this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration in Birnin Kebbi. Additionally, Governor Idris donated N20 million to retired military personnel.

In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Ahmed Idris, it was emphasized that the state is committed to restoring peace and safeguarding lives. Governor Idris highlighted the government’s intention to actively involve ex-servicemen in the state’s security apparatus, including their inclusion in the state security committee. He noted, “Let me use this medium to emphasize that the special adviser on security to the government is a retired military officer.”

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Umar Abubakar-Tafida, the governor acknowledged the significance of paying tribute to fallen heroes and honouring gallant officers who sacrificed their lives for the cause of peace in Nigeria and globally. While commending the efforts of the military and other security agencies currently combating insurgency, banditry, and various forms of criminality, the governor stressed the need for reflection during this occasion.

Governor Idris assured continued support to the Nigerian Legion, a veterans’ organization, to cater for ex-servicemen and their families. As a demonstration of this commitment, he donated N20 million to the state chapter of the Nigerian Legion to mark the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration. Furthermore, the governor announced the allocation of Hajj seats to the legion for the upcoming pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. He pledged to look into the matter of land allocation for the construction of a secretariat for ex-servicemen.

The Head of Service, Alhaji Sufyanu Garba-Bena, introduced the Emblem Appeal Week, highlighting its annual occurrence to commemorate the nation’s compatriots and honour living veterans of the military.

Chairman of the Kebbi chapter of the Nigerian Legion, Garba Hassan-Suru, expressed the support and loyalty of ex-servicemen to the governor’s administration. He commended the governor for the care provided to legion members and their families. Additionally, he appealed for assistance from the government to complete the construction of the legion’s headquarters and secure Hajj seats. The chairman also requested land allocation in the state capital, Birnin Kebbi, and other local councils in the state.

Apart from the N20 million donated by the state government, commissioners contributed N1 million each, and the 21 local council chairmen matched this amount. The Legion chairman adorned the deputy governor with the appeal emblem, symbolizing the commencement of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration.
