2020 JAMB: Examination Bodies Harmonize Time Table
Ahead of the 2020 UTME, Heads of Examination Agencies in Nigeria have met to harmonise their various examinations timetable with a view to preventing clashes in the examination dates.
The meeting which was held in Lagos on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, had Heads of examination bodies such as the Committee Chairman and Head of National Office, West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mr. Olu Adenipekun, in attendance.
As customary, the body meets every year to discuss processes and examination schedules in the overall interest of the candidates by taking into cognizance the timetable for the examination bodies for the avoidance of clashes.
The group had meaningful discussions and all the seemingly grey areas were resolved. It would be recalled that during the 2019 UTME, there were rumours making the rounds of the clash of some practical subjects. The meeting harmonized all examination calendars by aligning their respective activities with those of other sister agencies to ensure that candidates do not suffer in their desire to write terminal examinations or selection examinations.
Meanwhile, the HNO, WAEC, Mr. Adenipekun, used the opportunity to inform members that he would be retiring from public service by March, 2020.
Members commended the HNO for his meritorious service in WAEC and also expressed hope that his retirement would be eventful given his enormous selfless service to humanity. Mr. Adenipekun was also appreciated for his contributions to educational assessment as the current president of AEAA.
Also in attendance were the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. !s-hag Oloyede. the Acting Registrar National Examinations Council (NECO), Mr. Abubakar Gana, and the Registrar, National Business & Technical Examination Board (NABTEB), Prof. Mercy Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe.
JAMB DEFENDS USE OF NIN IN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has defended its partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) aimed at achieving mandatory acquisition of the National Identification Number (NIN) for candidates desirous of taking the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
This came on the heels of the invitation to the Board by the House of Representatives’ Committee on Tertiary Education to throw more light on the partnership between JAMB and NIMC on the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) for the registration of intending candidates.
Following the comprehensive explanations offered by the duo, the Committee said they had heard from the Board and would make a comprehensive report to the House. Earlier, the two agencies had explained their levels of preparedness, the partnership and perception in order to allay public fears on the workability of the union.
The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-hag Oloyede, and his counterpart from NIMC, Engr. Aliyu Aziz, informed members of the Committee that the use of NIN was a directive of the Federal Government which must be complied with. In addition, the meeting served to highlight the fact that the law mandating the domiciliation of all biometric data with NIMC was a creation of the National Assembly.
To allay the fear over the proposed partnership, the Registrar disclosed the various measures put in place by the Board to ensure that candidates are not put under any pressure in their bid to register for the 2020 UTME.
