Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, whose daughter, Mrs Funke Olakunrin, was killed by an armed gang on the Kajola-Ore road, Ondo State, on Friday July 12, has raised an alarm over the state of Nigeria.

In a video obtained on Monday, Fasoranti, who was in tears, said in Yoruba, that the country was at war, and that Fulani herdsmen were scaring people and occupying farmlands across the nation.

His words: “May God continue to protect us because we are at war. When we go to the farm we meet them (herdsmen) there; that even scares us. We cannot go to our fathers’ land again.

“If we plant crops, they (herdsmen) won’t allow it be. So we must continue to pray and may God continue to answer our prayers.”

Earlier, on Saturday, President Muhammadu Buhari was in phone contact with the Yoruba leader.

A statement by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, said Buhari condoled with the grieving nonagenarian, wishing him the comfort of God, and fortitude to bear the great loss.

“He also assured that security agencies would spare no effort to apprehend the culprits, and bring them to justice”, it added.

On Sunday, Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo stated that the Federal Government was doing everything possible to improve the nation’s security architecture to ensure the protection of lives and property.

Osinbajo during his visit to Fasoranti, said: “We are looking at the whole security architecture and trying to scale up and ensure that we are able to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians.

“Security in a big country like Nigeria, as you can imagine the challenge, is dynamic and we also have to be consistently dynamic to ensure that we are able to beat the challenges as they appear,’’ he said.

Osinbajo recalled how Buhari recently met the service chiefs and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, during which the latter laid out a new policy of the community policing.

“One of the most important things in this sort of crime, because they are largely economic crimes, is that people try to make money by kidnapping.

‘‘Another important thing is intelligence gathering; that is why we have the community policing system where policemen would be trained in their own local governments and they would remain there.

“This is as close as we get to the community policing structure that we expect to have while we are engaging the Army so that there will be a bit of more military presence especially along the roads.’’

Osinbajo disclosed that the IGP had already committed to ensuring that there was full coverage by the police and even helicopters.

“This is to fasten the search for these killers and also to ensure that there is adequate police presence to deter this kind of terrible situation from re-occurring,’’ he said.

He expressed hope that there would be peace and calm as “some of the steps taken begin to come into fruition’’.

On his part, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) described the incident as seriously unacceptable.

Tinubu expressed concern about insecurity in the country and its challenges, which he said, must be faced squarely.

“The security challenges are numerous across the country. We have to fight it. More police are being recruited but it will take time to train and deploy them to various areas.

“Additional police patrols and security reinforcements are necessary along Ore Road and other black spots.

“We have discussed it among the various authorities and the governor is eminently aware and being proactive about it.

“We also have to fight poverty, unemployment and other causes that might lead people to crime and equally create opportunities to convert this tragedy to prosperity,’’ he said.

Funke Olakunrin: Stop indicting Fulani herdsmen, we know how kidnapping started – Tinubu

tinubu and fasoranti

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has called for caution over the tagging of Fulani herdsmen as those behind the killing of the daughter of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, Mrs Funke Olakunrin.

Reports that Tinubu, who paid a condolence visit to the Afenifere National Leader in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Sunday over the murder of Mrs Olakunrin by those suspected to be herdsmen, stated that Fulanis should not be held responsible for the incident.

The former Lagos State Governor who emphasized that the origin of kidnapping can be traced in the country, maintained that the death of the 58-year-old should not be used to divide the country.

“I’m extremely concerned about security, I don’t want a stigma, I can go through history of kidnapping in Nigeria and we know how and where it all started, there are a lot of copycats.

“How many years ago have we faced the insecurity in the country? There are cases of kidnapping, is Evans too, who was arrested and made disclosures, also a herdsman?

“I don’t want to be political, but I will ask where are the cows?”

He added that with the spate of insecurity in the country, it was time to face it squarely and put an end to it once and for all.

“I am a nationalist and the securtity concern and challenge right now must be faced squarely throughout Nigeria.

“We must not use this incident to divide ourselves but we must use it as a cure to the security problem. Additional police, additional patrol, and additional security reinforcement along Ore road and various flash points across the country is necessary and I have discussed this among the various authorities. The governor (Akeredolu) is eminently aware and being proactive about this.

“The security challenges are numerous across this country and to fight it we are going through that, more police are being recruited and it takes time to train and deploy them to various areas, nobody prepares more than necessary for this.

“But if you look at Zamfara, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti and all areas, then we need to fight poverty, unemployment and the causes that might lead people to crime.

“Equally we must create opportunity to convert this tragedy to prosperity.”

While describing the death of Mrs Olakunrin as a sad one, he disclosed that him and the deceased chatted few days to her death.

“The incident that affected one member of our family Mrs Olakunrin is seriously sad, and unacceptable but nobody can return her alive, she has answered the call of her creator.

“Funke is very close to me and she died a premature death. Only four or five days ago, we chatted and I know what she discussed with me and about Baba’s health conditions. We just pray that this will not happen again,” Tinubu said.

Recall that the deceased was reported to have been shot dead by suspected Fulani herdsmen in her Land Cruiser SUV within the Ore axis of the Benin-Sagamu expressway.

He said 58-year-old Mrs. Olakunrin was killed by persons suspected to be herdsmen while heading to Ore Junction from Akure, Ondo State, where she was attacked and shot by her attackers.

But the Ondo State police command refuted Odumakin’s claim, saying it was an armed robbery attack.

Also, Buhari in his stead said, “ Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti’s daughter, Mrs Funke Olakunrin was killed along Ondo-Ore road by those described as armed robbers by Ondo Police Command. “

Speaking on the development, Buhari’s fierce critic, Omokri has criticised the current administration as being “Inept and Dishonest”

Omokri queried why there were three different angles to those responsible for the death of Pa Fasoranti’s daughter.

The former presidential aide on his Twitter page wrote: “Why is General Buhari’s government inept and dishonest?

“The Nigeria President claims “armed robbers” killed Pa Fasoranti’s daughter. Police claim it is ‘kidnappers’. Eyewitnesses testify it is ‘herdsmen’.

“1 death, three different stories! Who do we believe?

Here are some reactions from other Nigerians on Twitter:

@Babatope3291 “The death of the daughter of Afenifere leader, is political, not from Fulani herdsmen.”

@umehoma “The killing of the daughter of Afenifere is sad, but why wait until someone in high place is affected before realizing there’s fire on the mountain? Some of these Fulani Herdsmen have proven to be terrorists, but the best way to reward them is RUGA.”

@RealOladele “We need to put an end to Fulani Herdsmen brutality in this country. They need to leave the yorubas land and go back to where they belong. Osinbajo should stand up to Buhari to condemn the killing of Afenifere leader “Pa Fasoranti” daughter.”

@ChrisRizzy “How many more calls is Buhari going to place considering the rate at which these things happen with no solution in sight, these are crazy times in my country with no good reports whatsoever.”

@Mamakum19 “What is the government doing to curb this issue of herdsmen kidnapping and killing Nigerians? Nothing!!! The security issues under this admin is scary. Many families are mourning and the govt has chosen to turn a blind eye. The blood of these people is crying out for justice.”

@Prodataologist “We don’t want his condolence anymore, we want security and a strong decisive action statement against his kinsmen who are on the killing sprees with reckless impunity.Enough of all these crocodile tears. Perhaps, he should relinquish power to someone who is more competent.”

@Radiobiafralive “The brazen terror attack on Yoruba soil by Fulani terrorists must not go unanswered. Let the murder of the daughter of Afenifere Chairman, Funke Fasoranti Olakunrin be another wake-up call.“

How IPOB reacted to killing of Pa Fasoranti’s daughter by suspected herdsmen

Fasoranti killed by fulani herdsmen

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Saturday, condemned the killing of Mrs Funke Fasoranti, daughter of Pa Reuben Fasoranti by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

IPOB described the killing of Mrs Olakunrin as an attack on the South West which should not be accepted.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the separatist group stated that the killers should not go unpunished.

The statement reads: “The brazen terror attack on Yoruba soil by Fulani terrorists yesterday must not go unanswered. Let the murder of the daughter of Afenifere Chairman Funke Fasoranti Olakunrin by Fulani terrorists be another sombre but timely reminder to the great Yoruba race and their media in particular that supporting evil has its unintended consequences.

“I hate to say it but this sad incident goes to underscore the prediction I made long ago – that this Govt of Nigeria as constituted from 2015 is a murderous Fulani Wahabbi cabal on a Jihadi mission to terrorise, subjugate and enslave everybody unfortunate enough to be part of the British colonial experiment gone mad called Nigeria.

“I specifically warned the Yoruba race and their dominant media that supporting Fulani atrocities against Biafra and suppression of the truth about the true identity of Jubril Aminu Al-Sudani because of Tinubu’s 2023 presidential ambition will not only be counter-productive but will turn around to consume them. They called me a merchant of hate speech. Today I ask them, what is happening?

“It is unfortunate that at a time of great peril like this, weak men hand-picked by the same Fulani caliphate that are persecuting everybody today, are the ones in charge of the leadership of the South. Fulani terror will only stop when we confront them with an equal force, mere words will not do it.

“The time for the mother of all popular resistance is now not tomorrow. Only an IPOB led mass revolution will save the day because we are the only ones with a history of resistance againt the vandals from the Sahel.

“The sooner the youths of the Middle Belt and South West rise up to join IPOB to dismantle the Zoo and chart a new course for the respective ethnic nationalities that make up Nigeria, the better our chances of survival or else we are all doomed.”
