Rivers State Governor, Siminilayi Fubara, recently administered the oath of office to a new set of permanent secretaries, urging them to uphold professionalism and remain apolitical in the execution of their duties. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Chamber of the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

Governor Fubara emphasized that the selected individuals were not merely fortunate but were appointed based on their competence in various ministries, showcasing the trust placed in them to contribute significantly to the state’s service delivery. The governor acknowledged the absence of proper administrative heads in several ministries, with some roles being carried out in a supervisory capacity. With these appointments, he expects the new permanent secretaries to provide effective leadership and make decisions that align with the principles of good governance.

During the ceremony, Governor Fubara assured the appointees of a conducive work environment that would enhance their productivity. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of Rivers people and ensuring robust security measures. The governor urged the newly appointed permanent secretaries to align with his policies to facilitate better service delivery.

He stressed, “It is not just being lucky to be among the ones that are chosen to be permanent secretaries at this critical time of our government. But live up to it. Know that it is not just an appointment. After two or three months, your faces will start to change. But see it as a call to duty.”

Governor Fubara acknowledged the significant responsibilities that come with the roles of permanent secretaries, especially considering the extended period some ministries have been without proper leadership. He explained that the appointments were made to ensure that all ministries have administrative heads while waiting for political heads to be appointed.

Subsequently, the governor instructed the Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. George Nwaeke, to facilitate the handover of official cars to the 16 newly sworn-in permanent secretaries. The list of appointees includes Hebron Wisdom, Dede Friday, Briggs Karibo, Nyempe Gregory, Ndah Emmanuel, and Ngochindo Epobari, among others.

The swearing-in ceremony took place amid tension, following the state House of Assembly’s demand for Governor Fubara to re-present the 2024 budget. Despite the political atmosphere, the governor expressed his dedication to steering the government in the right direction, and he called on the newly appointed permanent secretaries to contribute positively to the development of the state.
