The Federal Government has been advised to halt the proposed construction of the contentious Lagos to Calabar Coastal superhighway project and redirect its focus towards more urgent priorities, according to members of Nigerians for Better Nigeria (NBN).
In a statement issued by their National Secretary, Abdulmumin Sanusi, NBN argued that while the coastal superhighway is important, it does not take precedence over other pressing needs.
The statement highlighted the necessity of the superhighway but emphasized that it is not a top priority now. It cited the dire economic situation facing many Nigerians, with the primary concern being access to food.
Even though NBN recognized the importance of roads, it asserted that constructing a superhighway amidst the prevalence of dilapidated and impassable roads across the country is not a priority. They questioned why the government would prioritize building a new highway instead of fixing existing infrastructure.
Moreover, the statement pointed out various critical issues that demand immediate attention, such as healthcare, education, minimum wage, power supply, and the high cost of living. It argued that addressing these issues should precede constructing a coastal highway.
NBN also raised concerns about the displacement of citizens and destruction of livelihoods due to the rush to commence construction from the Lagos axis. They advocated for the suspension of the project until the government addressed the pressing needs of the citizens.
Furthermore, NBN suggested that if and when the construction resumes, it should begin from the Calabar axis, where fewer structures will be demolished, before proceeding to Lagos.
