Court Orders Adeleke to Halt Installation of New Area-elect

An Osun State High Court in Osogbo has issued an order preventing State Governor Ademola Adeleke from presenting any certificate, instrument, or office staff to the newly-elected Aree, Prince Muritala Oyelakin.

This decision comes after the State Governor approved Prince Oyelakin as the new Area of Iree in March 2024, following the nullification of Oba Raphael Ponle’s appointment by former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola in 2022.

Prince Alli Afolabi, feeling aggrieved, took legal action against the Governor, alleging that the selection of Oyelakin violated due process and involved fraudulent practices.

Despite the state government scheduling Saturday, May 3, 2024, for the official installation and presentation of instruments of office to the Aree-elect, former monarch Oba Ponle approached the State High Court seeking an interim injunction. This injunction aims to restrain the Governor, the Attorney-General, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Boripe North Local Council Development Area from issuing any certificates, instruments, or staff of office to Prince Oyelakin or formally installing him as the community monarch.

In its ruling, the court recognized the urgency of maintaining the status quo until the hearing and determination of the motion for an interlocutory injunction. Consequently, it granted the applicant’s request, restraining the relevant authorities from issuing any certificates, instruments, or office staff to Prince Oyelakin or taking further steps towards his formal installation as the Aree of Iree.
