Akeredolu beats Jegede, Ajayi to emerge winner of Ondo election

Incumbent Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has emerged the winner of the governorship election held on Saturday.

Akeredolu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, was declared winner after polling the highest number of votes.

The result was announced by the election’s Chief Returning Officer, Prof. Abel Olayinka who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, UI.

The governor who will be spending another four year term in office won in 15 of the 18 local government areas of the state while his rival, Eyitayo Jegede of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP won the remaining three within the Central Senatorial District.

Akeredolu’s deputy, Agboola Ajayi who is the candidate of the Zenith Labour Party, ZLP could not secure any local government.

According to the votes as announced, Akeredolu polled a total of 292,830 votes, Jegede scored 195,791 with Ajayi coming a distant third with 69,127.

Ondo election: Akeredolu defeats Deputy, Ajayi, Mimiko

The Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi who is also the candidate of the Zenith Labour Party, ZLP, during the Saturday’s governorship, failed to win his local government.

Ajayi was defeated by his boss, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress, APC in his Ese-Odo council area.

The estranged Deputy Governor scored 4,760 as against Akeredolu who polled a massive 13,383.

Also, the former Governor of the state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko who is the National Leader of ZLP lost his local government to APC.

Mimiko who is from Ondo West Local Government scored 10,159 while Akeredolu polled.

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Governor Rotimi Akeredolu SAN, on his re-election as Governor of Ondo State

Akeredolu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, won in 15 of the 18 local government areas of the state while his rival, Eyitayo Jegede of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP won the remaining three.

He polled a total of 292,830 votes to defeat Jegede who scored 195,791.

Reacting, Buhari in a statement by his Spokesman, Femi Adesina noted that the votes garnered “show that one good turn surely deserves another.”

He thanked the people of Ondo State for keeping faith with their Governor, and the All Progressives Congress (APC), adding that “the people know the person and party that truly serves them, and have spoken in a clear voice and unmistakable terms.”

The statement added that ”President Buhari appreciates the electorate in Ondo State for comporting themselves decently and in order, and for exhibiting conduct that indicates that the country is making progress in its electoral behaviour.”

He also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for organizing a credible, free and fair election and the security agencies for ensuring that orderliness was enthroned and maintained.

He urged Gov Akeredolu to be humble and magnanimous in victory, and serve the people of Ondo State even better than how he did in the first term.
