EXAMINATION RESULT BREAKDOWN

Gentlemen of the media, it is with a heart full of gratitude to God that, I, on behalf of the Registrar to Council, the Management and Staff of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, welcome you to this press briefing to announce the release of the results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2020.

The examination was simultaneously and successfully conducted throughout the five member countries — The Gambia, Ghana,
Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone using one and the same International Timetable.

You will recall that the examination, which was earlier scheduled to commence on 6th April, 2020 could not, as a result of the outbreak of the novel COVID-19 pandemic.

Everybody was scared stiff. Nobody wanted to take any action that could further put the life of the Nigerian Child in greater peril. However, after
much discussions with relevant authorities, the examination finally commenced on 17th August, 2020 and ended on 12th September, 2020, spanning a period of four weeks.

This was a deliberate attempt to manage the COVID-19 crisis. The Coordination of Examiners and Marking of Candidates’ Scripts took place at Eighty four (84) Marking Venues throughout the country. A total of Seventy Eight Thousand, Seven Hundred and Ninety-Nine (78,799) Examiners participated in the coordination and marking exercise.

The examination itself was a study in God’s divine intervention.
At a time the fear of the COVID-19 pandemic was hanging dangerously in the air like a high-tension wire, WAEC, with the collaboration of the various levels of government and other stakeholders, safely and successfully conducted the examination without any of the candidates contracting the virus in the examination hall or dropping dead.

We are equally happy to inform you that during the conduct of the examination, there was no reported case of any invigilator, supervisor, WAEC staff or any examination functionary for that matter, being infected with the virus as all the COVID-19 protocols were meticulously observed.

We, the Management and entire Staff of the Council in Nigeria, wish to express our profound gratitude to the Government of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria, for allowing the Council to conduct the examination, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 Pandemic.

We also thank the Honourable Minister of Education, Minister of State for Education and the various State Governments, for providing an enabling environment for the successful conduct of the examination.

We wish to extend our gratitude to all the Supervisors, Invigilators, Custodians, Examiners and other Ad-hoc personnel for their contributions towards the successful conduct of the examination and marking of scripts.

Our sincere appreciation equally goes to the officials of the Federal and State Ministries of Education and Health, Chairmen and Members of the Senate and House Committees on Basic & Secondary Education, Chairman
and Members of the Nigeria Administrative and Finance Committee of WAEC, all retired WAEC staff, for their prayers and support, other Friends of the Council, ANCOPPS, the Nigeria Police and other Security Agencies, for their assistance and cooperation during the conduct of the examination.

We are grateful to the schools that availed the Council of the use of their
facilities, despite other commitments. May I also use this opportunity to once again thank those who donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Council, following our call for donations.
